OUR PROPRIETARY PILLARS OF IMPACT
TEACH
MWA will advocate for the implementation of SEL and MHL into public schools K-12 education nationwide with a focus on cities with high concentrations of African Americans and trauma exposure.
Support passage of legislation to increase K-12 school funding to implement SEL in all public schools nationwide.
Build a free national model curriculum given for K-12 administrators, teachers, school personnel, parents, and communities to teach basic mental health literacy.
Build a culturally competent, trauma-informed SEL curriculum to be freely disseminated nationwide to K-12 public schools.
TRAIN
MWA is positioned to leverage substantial funding to train thousands of Black people to become research and clinical service providers in psychology, counseling, social work, and related clinical and research fields. We will achieve this by:
Providing technical assistance to mental health training programs nationwide to enhance cultural competence within curricula and academic settings.
Increase the authorization of the national Minority Fellowship program (renaming it the Mental Wealth Scholars program) from $25 million to $75 million to support Black students’ training in becoming psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists.
Establish a scholarship fund for students to pursue masters and doctoral degrees to increase the number of mental health care professionals from 4% to 14% to reflect the proportion of Black people in the U.S.
TREAT
MWA is committed to providing free therapy to 10 million Black Americans in 5 years.
We will provide financial support to existing, culturally competent Black-led mental health services organizations (e.g., BEAM).
We will provide pass-through funding to establish and support Black mental health outreach and awareness building organizations.
